CE testing: scope the methods, sample and report evidence
Plan product-specific tests and relate their results to the conformity file without treating one report as universal CE approval.
Define the assessment question before commissioning tests
There is no one CE test that covers every product. Start with the applicable requirements and risk questions, then decide which tests, calculations or other evidence are appropriate for the chosen route. Define the product configuration, sample, operating conditions and method references. Identify whether a laboratory task or a designated body’s task is required.
Ask the laboratory what its report will cover, which methods it can perform and how deviations or exclusions will be recorded. Competence for a test is different from notification for a legal assessment decision. The plan should explain how results relate to the technical requirements, rather than collect attractive certificates without a relevant evidence chain.
A hypothetical report for an unrepresentative sample
A controller passes testing with a short shielded cable, but the sold configuration uses a longer unshielded cable and additional accessories. Compare the sample photos, setup, bill of materials and report limitations with the actual product. A pass for the tested setup does not automatically establish evidence for every supplied configuration.
The responsible technical reviewer must assess whether the differences affect the results and what additional evidence is necessary. Resolve exclusions and failed results rather than remove them from the file. The next action is a justified test scope or supplementary assessment, retaining the original report and the rationale for its use.
Accept the report as evidence within its limits
Check the report’s sample identification, method version, conditions, results and stated limits, including annexes. Map the conclusions to the requirements they address and note requirements needing other evidence. Confirm the product family coverage with a documented rationale; a laboratory report does not itself sign the manufacturer’s declaration or approve unrelated future variants.
Kayra may coordinate the test brief and evidence index under an agreed support role. The laboratory is responsible for its reported work, and a required independent body retains its assigned decision. The manufacturer must establish the full conformity assessment before marking; testing support does not guarantee a pass or universal legal acceptance.

The records needed to define the test configuration and report scope depend on the confirmed scope. Current, consistent and traceable information reduces avoidable revisions.
