BRCGS Packaging Materials Packaging Safety and Quality
BRCGS Packaging Materials concerns product safety and quality in packaging manufacture. The current basis is Issue 7 and its applicable position statements. A food site’s Food Safety certification does not automatically cover the packaging manufacturer’s operations.
Scope and current rules
An initial Packaging Materials brief should identify the manufacturing site, materials, intended uses and printing, laminating or converting operations. Attach representative customer specifications and the revision history of the proposed packaging. State which processes are outsourced and which food-contact evidence remains unresolved.
Connect preparation to real production
The technical contact verifies the brief against a real packaging batch; production owners supply material and process records. Separate programme preparation from legal food-contact evidence and any testing. The approved body confirms the certification scope. Do not describe artwork approval or an existing food-factory certificate as acceptance of the packaging application.
A hypothetical packaging producer transfers approved artwork to a new laminate structure. Previous artwork approval does not establish the new material’s intended use. Link the customer’s use description, layer and adhesive changes, approved drawing version and manufactured batch. Examine the necessary food-contact compliance evidence separately; a Packaging Materials assessment does not automatically replace that legal compliance.
Independent decision and consultancy
Track the actual implementation of corrective actions after the audit. Assess new inks, material layers or lines for their effect on hazards and scope. Follow Issue 7 alongside current position statements; certificate continuation depends on assessment under the relevant certification body rules.
Kayra Patent consultancy supports scope definition, record organisation and tracking unfinished preparation work. The relevant authorised or scheme approved body performs the audit and makes the certification decision. Separate consultancy and that body’s services in the quotation.
