CE marking: product scope, conformity route and preparation

Start with the actual product, intended use and manufacturer role to plan conformity evidence before CE marking.

01

Describe the product before choosing a route

Prepare a controlled description covering models, configurations, intended users, operating conditions and the market in which the product will be placed. Identify the legal manufacturer, including products commissioned and sold under that company’s own brand. The description must be detailed enough to identify all relevant EU product requirements, not just a familiar standard.

Map those requirements to the assessment route and supporting evidence. Where more than one legal act applies, resolve each applicable part. Determine any required independent-body involvement from the law, then plan risk analysis, design records, testing, instructions and the declaration. CE marking is applied after the prescribed conformity assessment, not as the first preparation step.

02

A hypothetical controller with two configurations

A manufacturer describes one controller as a single family, but one version has a radio function and the other does not. A shared enclosure and sales name are insufficient to assume identical requirements. Obtain the configuration list, functional specification and existing evidence, recording where the versions differ before setting the assessment and test scope.

The decision file should show which evidence applies to each configuration and which gaps require work. Do not broaden a report for the non-radio model merely by adding the radio model to its cover page. Escalate the unresolved requirement and technical assessment to a competent specialist, and retain the rationale for any justified shared evidence.

03

Preparation outputs and responsibility

An agreed preparation assignment can produce an applicability matrix, evidence-gap list and sequence of actions with named owners. Record open classification or technical questions rather than hiding them behind a blanket “CE approved” statement. Confirm the exact versions of law, referenced standards and product documentation before releasing the final file.

Kayra may coordinate document preparation within its agreed competence. It does not act as a central CE approval office, and a positive review is not a guarantee of market acceptance. The manufacturer controls the final conformity claim; the correctly designated body and competent authorities retain their respective legal tasks.
