EMC conformity: apparatus boundaries, emissions and immunity
Identify the marketed equipment and intended electromagnetic environment before selecting an EMC assessment route.
Define the equipment and environment
EMC 2014/30/EU concerns electromagnetic compatibility of apparatus and fixed installations. A marketed functional unit, its operating modes, ports, connected devices and intended environment matter to the scope decision. Do not import the LVD voltage bands: battery operation or a low supply voltage is not itself an EMC exemption.
Assess both disturbance generated by the equipment and its ability to operate without unacceptable degradation under expected disturbance. Describe normal intended configurations before choosing technical methods. A component report, an electrical safety record or the absence of a customer complaint does not establish the complete unit’s EMC conformity.
Hypothetical case: battery logger with sensor connections
A supplier markets a battery-powered data logger together with several wired sensors and a USB interface. The file describes only the logger with disconnected ports and calls it exempt because its supply voltage is low. Obtain the supplied configurations, sensor connections, operating modes, interface use and installation instructions before deciding scope or evidence coverage.
Prepare a configuration/environment map and identify relevant emission and immunity questions for competent technical assessment. Require a reasoned coverage explanation for normal connected operation. Keep unsupported configurations open; do not treat a quiet disconnected prototype or one sensor’s component record as evidence for the marketed combination.
Route and responsibility
For apparatus, Article14 provides internal production control under AnnexII or EU-type examination followed by conformity to type under AnnexIII. The selected route must address the applicable essential requirements. A fixed installation instead needs its specific legal analysis and documented good engineering; the two subjects should not be given the same certificate checklist.
Kayra can help organise the equipment description, route questions and evidence gaps. The manufacturer establishes supported apparatus conformity and maintains production controls; a chosen notified body and competent authorities keep their own legal tasks. The next input is a controlled configuration brief, not an unqualified promise to issue an EMC approval.
