ISO 9001: choosing a certification body and verifying its scope

Compare ISO 9001 providers by legal issuer, accreditation edition, activity competence, independent decision and written audit assumptions.

Identify who will actually issue the certificate

Separate the sales intermediary, preparation consultant and legal certification body. Where accreditation is claimed, use the accreditor’s current record and scope to match the body, standard, edition and relevant activities. A logo or accreditation for another standard is not sufficient. Ask for the application rules, impartiality arrangements, complaints and appeal route, and certificate verification method.

Match competence and planning to the actual scope

Provide activities, sites, workforce, shifts, design responsibility and outsourced processes. Ask how the proposed team’s competence fits the work and how stage 1 and stage 2 will be planned. A quote excluding a manufacturing site is not comparable to whole-operation assessment. Clarify audit days, initial assessment, surveillance, recertification, travel, scope changes and additional review. Preparation, implementation and consultancy are distinct fees and roles.

Verify current standard and accredited edition separately

ISO 9001:2026 is published and 2015 is withdrawn from the catalogue. This does not automatically expand any body’s accredited scope to 2026 or determine the status of every existing certificate. Ask what criteria and edition the body can issue against, and how actual transition arrangements apply. Avoid a provider promising a new-edition accredited certificate without a verifiable scope record.

Use an actual verification result

For a hypothetical supplier, compare its certificate’s entity, activities and site with the purchased service. Record the number, edition, status, official verification route and date. An office-only scope cannot stand for unassessed manufacture. ISO does not issue certificates; the competent body assesses and decides independently. Consultancy cannot guarantee approval, legal compliance or universal customer recognition.

Preparation and independent decision

ISO does not issue certificates. Verify the proposed issuer, standard and activity against any claimed accreditation scope. Consultancy cannot guarantee approval; the competent body evaluates evidence and makes the independent decision. The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.

Official sources and application limits

The supplier example is hypothetical. Body competence and claimed accreditation need current evidence; no named provider’s specific authority is assumed by this guide.
