Certification body or consultant: define the engagement
Choose a provider by the task you need, the actual programme and the evidence of authority. Implementation assistance, an independent assessment and permission to use a certification mark are separate commitments.

Put the contract and deliverables in writing
Ask which legal entity will provide the preparation and which will perform any audit, review and certification decision. Preparation can include a gap review, action plan and assistance with records, while the organisation owns its operating system and approves its evidence. The certification body assesses conformity within an agreed scope. A shared brand, referral or single commercial contact does not prove that these roles are independent; relevant relationships must be disclosed and reviewed before assignment.
Check authority against the actual programme
ISO publishes standards and does not issue certificates. Check the proposed body’s accreditation record and annex for the actual standard, activity and sector. TÜRKAK records verify claims of TÜRKAK accreditation; a NAC claim must instead be checked with NAC. Scheme recognition and regulatory product designation are additional, distinct checks when required. QRS’s NAC-020-MS management-system record does not establish authority for every product programme. Its published KEK.04 policy excludes management-system consultancy; do not contract it as both your system implementer and independent certifier.
Use a controlled handover, not a certificate package promise
Suppose a manufacturer receives an offer for an “ISO and product certificate package”, but the draft scope omits its second production site and the product assessment route is unnamed. Separate the contracts and resolve those two questions before proceeding. Transfer a client-approved file containing actual activities and sites, document versions, operating records, actions and unresolved gaps. Consultant sign-off cannot close an audit finding or bind the body’s independent decision. An unresolved conflict or insufficient authority can require a different provider or refusal, rather than a guaranteed approval.
Verify the result and the conditions after assessment
The quotation should separate preparation work, independent audit or testing, surveillance or renewal, travel and any programme charges. Specify what additional work is triggered by missing records or findings; payment must not buy a favourable decision. Before using a certificate or mark, verify issuer identity, scope, sites, dates and current status through the issuer and the named accreditor or programme. Accreditation is not automatic acceptance by every purchaser or regulator. Keep the handover, final decision and mark-use instructions; use the body’s complaints or appeals route if the result or independence is disputed.
Official sources and application limits
The operating examples are hypothetical, not customer events or guaranteed decisions. The actual standard and competent body determine requirements.
