BRCGS Certificate Renewal and Audit
BRCGS Food Safety renewal requires a further assessment of the site’s actual operation. Read the re-audit due date, current audit option and scope on the certificate and previous report; do not substitute an assumed annual anniversary or the certificate expiry date.
Read the re-audit date before planning renewal
Ask the certification body to confirm the applicable audit arrangements. For an unannounced audit, contractual arrangements must be completed before the four-month window starts. Keep the body informed about shutdowns and other changes affecting planning. A consultant’s calendar reminder does not complete those arrangements.
Review what changed since the previous audit
Prepare previous findings and effectiveness checks, updated HACCP information, product and process changes, internal audit results, traceability exercises and relevant hygiene records. Link each unresolved issue to its owner and operational evidence. A signed action sheet alone does not demonstrate that a recurring production problem has stopped.
Hypothetically, a site books maintenance downtime but leaves its unannounced audit contract unconfirmed as the window approaches. It should disclose the shutdown and settle arrangements with the certification body. The current position statement warns that inadequate arrangements can cause a late audit, expiry of the current certificate and a major non-conformity.
Keep renewal separate from transfer and guarantees
Changing certification body in the last four months before the re-audit due date is not permitted without written BRCGS agreement through the certification body’s concession process. A cheaper renewal quote does not remove that restriction or reset the audit history.
Kayra can coordinate evidence review and corrective-action preparation. The approved certification body conducts the audit and decides certification. Neither paying an invoice nor handing over last year’s folder guarantees renewal, a particular grade or uninterrupted validity.
Official sources
Renewal is governed by the current BRCGS Food Safety protocol and mandatory position statements. Kayra offers preparation support; audit and certification decisions belong to the approved certification body.
Should renewal be scheduled from certificate expiry?
Use the actual re-audit due date and applicable audit option confirmed by the certification body; expiry is a separate field.
Can a cheaper body take over immediately before re-audit?
Not in the last four months before the due date without written BRCGS agreement through the body’s concession process.
Does payment automatically renew the certificate?
No. Renewal depends on the audit, relevant findings and the certification body’s decision.
