Directory performance ratings concern the body’s overall management of the scheme. They are additional selection information, not the grade your site will receive or a guarantee about an individual auditor. Consider communication, relevant competence and the written assessment arrangements alongside the approval record.
Make the scope question explicit before contracting
Provide the manufacturing address, food categories, processes, shifts, outsourced steps and requested customer scope. Ask the body to confirm the applicable Issue 9 requirements and current position statements, audit arrangements and exclusions. Compare offers using the same activity description rather than a price for an unspecified certificate.
Hypothetically, a confectionery manufacturer receives a Food Safety offer from a company whose Directory approval is only for Packaging Materials. Before signing, request the actual approved Food Safety issuing body and confirmation of the relevant product and process scope. Verify that answer in the official Directory and with the named body. Approval for packaging does not automatically cover food; an unclear listing requires clarification rather than an unsupported fraud allegation.
Keep the certification decision independent
Clarify the contract, audit and reporting responsibilities, corrective-action submission and review, certification decision and subsequent audit arrangements. A freelance auditor cannot issue a BRCGS certificate personally. The approved body must review the report and corrective actions independently before approving or refusing certification; an advance positive-result promise cannot replace that decision.
