GLOBALG.A.P. IFA v6 Smart and GFS: Differences
IFA v6 Smart and IFA v6 GFS are two parallel, valid editions for fruit and vegetables. GFS is designed for producers needing GFSI-recognised certification. Smart is not an expired or inferior edition simply because its name differs.
Choose the edition from the buyer’s actual requirement
Before selecting an edition, obtain the buyer’s written requirement for the products and supply route. Record the required edition, any add-ons and the handling activities involved. Do not turn a specific customer requirement into a claim that GFS is legally mandatory for every farm or export shipment. As of 3 October 2026, IFA v6.1 Smart has been published since 1 September. Its valid-from and replacement dates remain to be announced; v6.1 GFS is not yet public, and v6 GFS remains valid pending benchmarking. Confirm the applicable edition with the body.
Resolve a mismatch before promising acceptance
Hypothetically, an apple grower holds Smart certification but a new buyer’s specification explicitly requests GFS. The first step is to clarify the buyer’s requirement and discuss the applicable GFS rules with the approved certification body. Renaming the PDF or saying that every IFA certificate is equivalent cannot resolve the mismatch.
The editions have differences in general regulations, including unannounced certification-body audits. Use the chosen edition’s current regulations, principles and criteria and checklist, and identify any changed preparation needs. The buyer decides commercial acceptance; the certification body evaluates certification conformity. Consultancy does not decide either outcome.
Check the certificate scope as well as the edition
Confirm producer identity, products, sites, edition and current status through the relevant GLOBALG.A.P. platform. A GGN is an identifier, not evidence that every crop at every site is certified. An edition decision does not extend the certificate to an unlisted product or establish organic status.
Kayra can help compare the written buyer requirement with the proposed preparation scope. The approved certification body determines the applicable assessment and certification decision. Keep any buyer conditions, additional handling requirements and programme scope explicit rather than promising automatic access to all markets.
Official sources
The programme owner defines the two IFA editions and their rules; an approved certification body decides certification. Buyer acceptance and agreed consultancy preparation are separate responsibilities.
Is IFA v6 Smart invalid?
No. Smart and GFS are parallel valid editions; the buyer’s requirements help determine the suitable choice.
Can a Smart PDF simply be renamed GFS?
No. The applicable edition’s rules and assessment must be addressed with the approved certification body.
Does GFS certify every crop or organic production?
No. Verify the actual listed products, sites and status; organic claims require their own applicable route.
