ISO 13485 How to Choose a Certification Body
The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system.

Agree work that changes actual practice
Specify scope review, gap analysis, process responsibilities, training, controlled documents and support for collecting operating evidence. In a proposed engagement, require outputs the team can use: an assigned action owner, a tested control and a record linked to a real process. Downloaded forms with the client’s logo do not establish implementation. Decide who maintains the system after the adviser leaves.
Keep assessment and decision independent
ISO does not issue certificates. Verify the proposed issuer, standard and activity against any claimed accreditation scope. Consultancy cannot guarantee approval; the competent body evaluates evidence and makes the independent decision. The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.
Keep outsourced processes visible
For outsourced sterilisation or software development, identify specifications, supplier controls, acceptance responsibilities and access to evidence. Buying a validated service does not prove that its results fit your device and process. In a hypothetical sterile device, changing the packaging supplier may affect the established process; evaluate the change before relying on old evidence.
Standard edition and programme limits
ISO 13485:2016 concerns medical-device quality management systems. Its certificate is not device CE conformity, market authorisation or FDA approval. FDA’s QMSR took effect on 2 February 2026 and incorporates ISO 13485 within a regulatory framework; an ISO certificate does not exempt a manufacturer from FDA inspection. Device and destination-market duties require separate verification.
Official sources and application limits
The operating examples are hypothetical, not customer events or guaranteed decisions. The actual standard and competent body determine requirements.
