Is ISO 14001 mandatory? Contract and permit requirements
Verify the source of the certificate request separately from environmental duties.
Decision and conditional example
A supply contract may request an environmental management-system certificate without creating a general legal certification duty for every activity. Permits, notifications, monitoring and waste duties can still apply without certification. Determine obligations using the activity, jurisdiction and official authority. For the buyer’s request, confirm edition, sites and accreditation conditions in writing. An office-scope certificate should not be offered as evidence for an excluded production site. Plan certification and performance of regulatory duties as separate workstreams; neither the contract nor the system document automatically discharges the other.

Standard and authority boundaries
The current ISO catalogue edition is ISO 14001:2026. Publication alone does not determine an existing certificate’s status or extend a body’s accredited scope. Confirm edition and transition arrangements with the issuer. A management-system certificate is not an environmental permit, a zero-pollution claim or a guarantee that every legal condition is continuously met.

A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. ISO publishes standards and does not certify organisations. Verify the chosen body’s current standard edition, activity coverage and any claimed accreditation. Preparation does not guarantee approval, legal compliance or authority to certify a newly published edition. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.
