Is ISO 22301 mandatory? Sector and contract requests
A continuity duty and a specific certificate requirement need separate verification.
Decision and conditional example
A buyer or sector rule may require continuity arrangements without necessarily requesting ISO 22301 certification. Verify the exact wording, jurisdiction, sector and activity boundary through official or contractual evidence. If certification is requested, clarify entities, activities, edition and accreditation conditions. One group company’s certificate does not automatically cover another company’s service. Review the actual critical activities and recovery arrangements before deciding the work required. Commercial acceptance does not remove separate crisis, security or regulatory duties. Keep the required continuity implementation and the requested document assessment distinct.

Standard and authority boundaries
ISO 22301:2019 specifies business-continuity management-system requirements; the 2024 amendment is distinct from a new edition. Certification does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or an identical service level in every disaster. Business impact analysis, resource dependencies, continuity strategies and exercise results must relate to the actual certified scope.

The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. ISO publishes standards and does not certify organisations. Verify the chosen body’s current standard edition, activity coverage and any claimed accreditation. Preparation does not guarantee approval, legal compliance or authority to certify a newly published edition. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.
