Where and How to Obtain ISO 9001 Certification

Choose the certification body, confirm its scope and application channel, and agree the audit route before paying for an ISO 9001 certificate.

Apply to an independent certification body that can assess your actual activities and sites. Identify the issuer, verify the relevant accreditation where required, and agree the audit and certification responsibilities in writing. A local office or a paid quotation does not by itself establish who can issue the certificate.

01 · DECISION GUIDE

Where the application goes

ISO does not issue ISO 9001 certificates. The application goes to a certification body. Match its legal name, official domain, contact address and application form. If a representative handles the enquiry, ask which body will contract with you, conduct the audit and make the certification decision.

Get the customer or tender requirement in writing: activities, sites, standard edition and any accreditation condition. ISO currently lists ISO 9001:2026 as the published edition. For an existing ISO 9001:2015 certificate, ask the issuer about its status and transition conditions; publication of a new edition does not automatically extend the body’s accreditation scope.

02 · DECISION GUIDE

Two checks: the body before application, the certificate afterwards

Check the certification body through the relevant accreditation body’s register for the required management-system and activity scope. An accreditation logo on a proposal is insufficient evidence of the exact scope. Confirm the intended recipient’s acceptance conditions instead of treating “internationally accepted” as a universal promise.

After issue, verify the certificate number, organisation name, covered activities and sites, edition and current status through the issuer’s verification channel. ISO also identifies IAF CertSearch and direct contact with the relevant bodies as verification options. Accreditation of the issuer and validity of an individual certificate are separate checks.

03 · DECISION GUIDE

Agree the audit route and the organisation’s operating evidence

The organisation implements and operates its quality management system. Identify the processes and sites that belong in the scope, the people responsible for them, and records showing how the work is controlled. Agree readiness review, site audit, corrective-action review, certification decision and subsequent surveillance arrangements with the body.

Conditional example: a manufacturer receives a quotation covering only its sales office although the customer requires the production activity. Before accepting, clarify the manufacturing site, relevant processes and proposed certificate wording. An audit of the office alone should not be presented as evidence that an omitted production activity was assessed.

04 · DECISION GUIDE

Written answers needed before accepting the quotation

Ask which sites will be audited, the planned audit effort, the decision-maker and the treatment of findings. Separate initial assessment, surveillance, travel and any extra audit charges. Record cancellation, change, complaint and appeal arrangements in the contract; a payment request is not a certification decision.

For enquiries to Kayra Patent, state the activities, sites, workforce, existing certificate and requested edition. Ask for the certification function and current authority to be identified. The applicant owns its system; the body must maintain competence and impartiality. System implementation and the independent certification decision must not be treated as one promised outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Can ISO or a local intermediary issue the certificate?

ISO develops standards and does not issue certificates. Identify the certification body responsible for the audit and decision. A representative’s address or quotation does not establish that body’s authority.

Is an accreditation logo enough to choose a body?

Check the accreditation record and relevant scope, then confirm the customer’s acceptance requirement. After certification, separately verify the actual certificate and its current status.

What should be written into the quotation?

The activities and sites, audit effort, independent decision responsibility, surveillance, handling of findings and additional charges should be clear. Ask which legal entity will contract with you.

What changes for an existing ISO 9001:2015 certificate?

ISO currently lists ISO 9001:2026 as published. Confirm your certificate’s status and applicable transition arrangements with its issuer. Do not assume an automatic scope extension or invent a transition expiry date.

Scope and quotation

Define the activities, sites and certification request.

Share your activities, included sites, workforce, existing certificate and requested edition. Ask which body will audit the scope, make the independent decision and provide certificate verification.
