LVD questions: voltage scope, reports and safety responsibility

Resolve practical LVD questions without equating low DC voltage, a laboratory report or an ISO certificate with complete product conformity.

Does a low-voltage description decide the scope?

No. The LVD rating bands are 50–1000 V AC and 75–1500 V DC, with specified exclusions. Record the equipment’s actual rated input/output and supplied configuration. Equipment below those bands is not automatically exempt from all product-safety legislation. A mains-powered adaptor and the low-DC device it supplies must be identified and assessed in their proper contexts.

Does every LVD product require an independent certificate? LVD uses manufacturer internal production control and does not require notified-body approval. Appropriate testing and sound technical evidence may still be necessary. Neither an ISO management-system certificate nor a voluntary LVD certificate establishes the conformity of a particular model by itself.

Hypothetical question: a 48 V controller

A purchaser asks whether a 48 V DC controller may be sold without safety work because it falls below the LVD DC band. The sales bundle also contains a 230 V AC power supply and a connection enclosure. Obtain the ratings, marketed equipment boundaries, intended use and installation details before answering; the voltage of one circuit does not describe the entire supply.

Return a separate applicability and evidence answer for each identified item and the integration. Identify other relevant obligations where LVD itself is outside scope. Avoid both extremes: calling every part an LVD product because the bundle includes mains power, or declaring the complete offer free of electrical-safety obligations because the controller is 48 V.

What happens after an initial report?

Changes in construction, components, intended conditions or relevant standards can require review of the existing conformity basis. There is no general annual LVD certificate subscription that replaces this work. Preserve the tested configuration and assess whether changed equipment remains covered by the file, declaration and production controls.

Kayra can help formulate product-specific questions and organise the evidence needed for their answers. It does not issue a universal yes/no electrical approval from a model name. The next useful request identifies the equipment, ratings, supply arrangement, manufacturer and disputed claim, allowing a bounded technical answer rather than a generic certificate recommendation.
