CERTIFICATION & COMPLIANCE GUIDE

PED Questions: Scope, SEP, Testing and CE Responsibility

The answer to a PED question depends on the actual equipment and its intended market. A pressure value, a CE logo or a supplier's certificate cannot settle every scope and assessment question.

01

Does every pressurised product need PED CE?

No. Article 1 sets the scope and exclusions, and Article 4 distinguishes equipment subject to essential safety requirements from sound engineering practice. PS above 0.5 bar is a scope threshold, not proof that every such product follows the same CE route. Other legislation may govern excluded products.

SEP equipment must have adequate instructions and must not bear CE marking under PED. If another EU act requires CE, its basis must be identified separately. Do not use a voluntary commercial certificate to remove this distinction.

02

Can a special product use a general shortcut?

Hypothetically, a buyer describes a pressure cooker as a small vessel and asks to treat it as SEP from size alone. Annex II includes a specific pressure-cooker design assessment rule requiring a procedure equivalent to at least a Category III module. Identify the actual equipment and applicable special rule before using a general table.

The same discipline applies to vessels, piping, safety accessories and assemblies. Record the actual fluid classification and allowable limits. A tool result obtained from the wrong equipment type or table cannot support classification.

03

Does CE replace operational checks or all third-party work?

PED product conformity does not answer every national in-service inspection question. Nor does a generic management-system certificate replace equipment calculations, manufacture and final assessment. The manufacturer's declaration and a module-specific body document are different outputs.

For a request to Kayra, identify the question, product and evidence so its permitted role and impartiality can be established. No notified-body authority is asserted. A binding assessment result comes through the applicable manufacturer/body route, not from this public question guide.

Questions for this purpose

Is there one PED certificate for every category?

No. Category and selected procedure determine the obligations and outputs.

Must every final test be hydrostatic?

It is the normal method; Annex I allows conditional alternatives with additional equivalent measures.

Can a CE-marked component prove a whole assembly?

Component evidence does not replace the applicable assembly integration and protection assessment.
