FSSC 22000 and ISO 22000: Scope and Certification Differences

ISO 22000 is the food-safety management-system standard. FSSC 22000 incorporates that standard, applicable sector prerequisite programmes and FSSC scheme requirements. A standalone ISO 22000 certificate therefore cannot be presented as FSSC certification simply because the numbers are similar.

Compare the required programme, not similar numbers

Begin with the buyer's actual requirement and the site's food-chain activities. Identify the required programme, legal entity, premises and processes. A customer contract can require a particular certification; this does not make that certificate universally mandatory by law for every food business.

Map the gap when the buyer requires FSSC

Hypothetically, a manufacturer holds ISO 22000 certification and offers a PDF renamed ‘ISO/FSSC’ when a buyer asks for FSSC. Retain the true document identity and compare existing system evidence with the applicable PRP and FSSC requirements. Identify implementation gaps and the appropriate licensed-body certification route.

Existing ISO procedures and authentic records can inform the review, but their presence does not establish completion of the additional programme. Ask the licensed body about the actual site and initial FSSC process. The Version 7 upgrade window for existing FSSC certification is not an automatic conversion route for every ISO-certified business.

Choose a version-aware implementation plan

Use the current scheme documents, relevant sector PRP standards and applicable interpretation decisions. Version 7 introduces the revised PRP framework; determine what applies to the intended audit under the official transition arrangements instead of merely changing a manual's version label.

The business implements controls and supplies truthful evidence; the licensed certification body assesses and decides FSSC certification. Consultancy cannot relabel an ISO certificate into FSSC, guarantee the buyer's acceptance or replace regulatory food obligations. The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. For FSSC certification, separately verify the selected legal entity’s programme licence, relevant scope and current status; ISO 22000 accreditation alone is not an FSSC licence. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.

Official sources

This comparison identifies programme requirements and an honest implementation route. ISO certification is not rebranded as FSSC, and customer requirements remain distinct from universal legal duties.

Is ISO 22000 certification automatically FSSC?

No. FSSC also includes applicable PRP and scheme requirements and its certification process.

Can the existing ISO system be used?

Its genuine procedures and records can support a gap review; additional requirements still need assessment and implementation.

Does the V7 upgrade window convert any ISO certificate?

No. Confirm the actual initial or upgrade route with a licensed body.
