ATEX application workflow: protection function, evidence and release
Prepare an ATEX conformity workflow from defined product function and applicable procedure through supported release records.
Define the protection function first
Begin with the supplied product and intended use. A separately marketed autonomous protective system has a different function from an equipment component: it halts an incipient explosion or limits its affected range. Record the actual function and interfaces before choosing the legal treatment or requesting a certificate.
Article 13 provides specific procedures for protective systems, using type examination with the applicable production route or unit verification. Equipment and components need their own analysis. A generic application form cannot settle product status, category, interfaces or the technical evidence required by the chosen route.
Hypothetical case: shutdown system ready for labelling
A supplier plans to release a protective shutdown system using a draft plate and constituent records before its stated protection function and interfaces have been assessed. Obtain the functional description, controlled design, operating conditions, risk/requirement map and evidence of how the function is achieved. Resolve whether the supplied unit actually meets the claimed product definition.
Establish the competent assessment and production tasks before treating the draft label as a release document. Record unresolved function/interface questions and their closure evidence. A component attestation or submitted application does not prove the protective system works as claimed, and no successful outcome is assumed in this hypothetical example.
Move from assessment to controlled release
After supported assessment, reconcile the actual product version, required body records, production controls, instructions and applicable declaration/attestation/marking. The legal steps depend on product status and route; do not copy an equipment CE checklist onto a component or use a type certificate as the whole production release decision.
Kayra can coordinate this file and task sequence. Engineering, laboratories, any body and the manufacturer retain their actual responsibilities. The next action is closure of the function and interface gaps, followed by a documented release review tied to the supplied version, without promising approval from an application alone.
