BRCGS and FSSC 22000: Choosing the Programme by Food and Packaging Scope

BRCGS is a family of standards, so name the requested one. Food Safety Issue 9 concerns food and food-ingredient manufacture, processing and packing; Packaging Materials Issue 7 concerns packaging operations such as manufacture, conversion and printing. Supplying a food customer does not make a packaging converter a food manufacturer.

Compare the actual programme and activity

FSSC 22000 combines ISO 22000, applicable sector prerequisite requirements and scheme additional requirements. Confirm the category and audit version with the licensed body. Under Version 7, a packaging-only manufacturer uses ISO 22002-100 and ISO 22002-4, not the food-manufacturing part 1. The published version does not alone establish which audit version applies today.

Resolve an unsuitable tender description

Compare programmes against the buyer’s actual written requirement, site activity, products, intended use and evidence. Identify relevant supplier, process, hygiene, traceability and corrective-action records. Similar control themes do not make the certification programmes or their audit and decision rules interchangeable.

Hypothetically, a film converter prints packaging for dairy products, but its customer’s tender names Food Safety or food-manufacturing FSSC requirements. Present the real converting and printing operation and ask the buyer to confirm an acceptable packaging programme in writing. Compare BRCGS Packaging Materials with the applicable FSSC packaging scope; do not describe the supplier as manufacturing dairy products simply to match the copied wording.

Map the preparation without promising conversion

Build a gap map for the selected documents and actual operation, keeping useful existing evidence while checking missing or different requirements. Agree scope, applicable version, audit arrangements and unresolved exclusions with the appropriately approved or licensed body. A certificate under one programme is not automatically a certificate under another.

Provide Kayra with the buyer’s written requirement, actual activity and existing certificate for a review of the request’s scope, relevant authority and impartiality. The applicant remains responsible for any management-system changes and for procedures and records specific to its own operations; designing or implementing that client’s management system is not offered. The buyer decides its acceptance criteria, and the relevant body assesses and decides certification. The operator remains responsible for lawful products and truthful scope. Neither scheme certificate automatically proves every packaging material’s food-contact compliance or replaces applicable statutory duties.

Official sources

Programme selection follows actual activity, buyer acceptance and confirmed scheme scope. Consultancy does not convert certificates, grant legal approval or guarantee certification.

Which BRCGS standard should a packaging converter consider?

Clarify Packaging Materials scope rather than assuming Food Safety applies because the customer makes food.

Is FSSC simply an ISO 22000 certificate?

No. Applicable sector prerequisites and FSSC additional requirements are also part of the scheme.

Does one scheme certificate automatically satisfy the other?

No. Confirm buyer acceptance and the relevant body’s assessment route and scope.
