CERTIFICATION & COMPLIANCE GUIDE

IFS Food, BRCGS Food Safety and FSSC 22000: Choosing by Buyer and Site Scope

IFS Food evaluates food products and production processes against food safety, authenticity, quality, legal and customer requirements. BRCGS Food Safety provides a framework for product safety, integrity, legality, quality and operational controls in food manufacture, processing and packing. FSSC 22000 certifies a food-safety management system using ISO 22000, relevant sector prerequisite programmes and FSSC scheme requirements. These are distinct assessment bases.

Compare the actual programmes, not only their logos

Start with the buyer’s written accepted programme, actual legal entity, site, products and operations. Compare each programme’s scope, applicable edition, additional or normative documents and authorised body. ISO 22000 alone is not automatically FSSC 22000; a BRCGS Packaging Materials certificate is not Food Safety, and IFS Logistics is not Food manufacture certification.

Resolve an acceptance mismatch before buying another audit

Create a decision table showing the required programme, buyer acceptance, covered site and process, current certificate and open gap. Ask the buyer to clarify ambiguous requirements and the relevant body to confirm assessment scope. Do not rank the programmes by a universal claim of superiority or assume one certificate satisfies every customer.

Hypothetically, a chilled-meal plant holds FSSC 22000, but a new retailer’s contract expressly requires IFS Food for that production site. Confirm the written requirement and whether the retailer accepts an alternative before planning any new audit. Verify the existing certificate’s site and process scope separately. A group logo or claim that all food certificates are equivalent does not resolve acceptance, and the existing certificate should not be relabelled as IFS Food.

Check current status and the correct decision owner

Use the programme’s actual evidence route: IFS Database and issuer information, BRCGS Directory, or FSSC Public Register. Match entity, address, products or activity, scheme and current status. A newly published scheme edition does not by itself establish whether a particular certificate is valid; check applicable transition rules and issuer status. A genuine certificate does not guarantee every individual batch.

The business implements controls. Each approved or licensed certification body applies its programme’s audit and decision rules. Before requesting an activity from Kayra, establish the actual programme, authority, permitted role and independence arrangements; programme comparison is not a claim of approval for all three or an offer to design a client’s management system.

Official sources

Choose from the buyer’s actual acceptance and site operations, then confirm the programme and body scope independently.

Is ISO 22000 alone automatically FSSC 22000?

No. FSSC includes relevant prerequisite and scheme requirements.

Does an existing FSSC certificate satisfy an explicit IFS request?

Not automatically. Clarify the buyer’s accepted programme and site scope.

Do programme logos prove every batch safe?

No. Verify current scope and maintain actual product controls.
