ISO 45001:2018 manages occupational health and safety risks. Certification does not guarantee no accidents and does not replace the employer’s legal duties.

01

Define workplaces and people affected

Include activities, sites, shifts and workers within the proposed system, with temporary staff and contractor interfaces where relevant. An office scope does not cover an excluded workshop. Describe who controls the work and how shared-site arrangements operate. Assess applicable legal and other obligations separately from a generic safety document list.

02

Use participation to identify and control hazards

Seek workers’ operational knowledge and remove practical barriers to consultation and participation. In a hypothetical maintenance job, ask how unexpected machine movement is prevented before work starts. Assess hazards and risks, consider elimination and stronger controls before relying only on protective equipment, and assign responsibility. A signed training sheet alone does not show that the work method is effective.

03

Prepare an accurate application

Provide work activities, site and shift information, personnel, contractors, risk assessment, control implementation and participation records. Match emergency arrangements to actual hazards. The catalogue still publishes ISO 45001:2018 with a 2024 amendment; a draft revision is not a new issued certificate basis. Clarify audit criteria, time and any claimed accreditation for the actual activities.

04

Preparation and independent decision

ISO does not issue certificates. Verify the proposed issuer, standard and activity against any claimed accreditation scope. Consultancy cannot guarantee approval; the competent body evaluates evidence and makes the independent decision. The applicant implements the system and prepares procedures specific to its own operations and operating records. A certification enquiry to Kayra concerns actual activities, sites, application information, authority and impartiality risks; this role does not include designing or implementing the client’s system. A management-system certification body, other parts of the same legal entity and controlled entities cannot offer or provide management-system consultancy; separate contracts do not remove this restriction.

Sources and application limits

The maintenance example is hypothetical. Occupational safety duties and permission requirements depend on work and jurisdiction; certification does not transfer the employer’s responsibility.
