GAR conformity for Indoor and outdoor gas heaters — Define the product boundary first

Local heaters do not transfer heat to the environment in the same way. The bored radiant device provides surface radiation while moving the combustion product in a tube; the plate that is roasted in ceramic radiant is a more open heat source; the terrace heater provides ambient heat in the open area with a mostly portable LPG tube. These differences can change the management of ignition, surface temperature, turnover, wind and combustion. The manufacturer should only be able to define the power value; height, protection distance, tube partition, hose-regulator, reflector and fixing details should be specified specifically for the product family.

The open space expression is not a marketing slogan, but a safety limit. A terrace that is four-sided with glass may not meet the definition of open or adequately ventilated space in the device instruction. Due to combustion products and oxygen consumption, the manufacturer must provide the allowed space geometry, wall-covering openings and ventilation conditions in a comprehensible manner. Displaying the device that is not suitable for the interior space in an indoor restaurant encourages predictable misuse even if it has the correct instructions.

In portable devices, the location of the LPG tube, the overturning shutdown, the protection of the hose from the hot surface and the connection control are critical. In fixed radiant systems, the joint control of the assembly carrier, the beamline, the burner-fan series and multiple units is important. Wind, rain and low temperature firing can affect the flame stability.

ATEX is not an automatic regulation for every heater with gas fuel. If the product is designed for use in an explosive atmosphere and enters the ATEX definition in terms of its ignition sources, a separate assessment is made; the use of fuel gas for normal terrace or warehouse heating does not result alone. Electronic ignition and remote control can create an EMC or RED relationship.

Product boundaries

How do you sort out the right product line in this category?

Name similarity alone is not sufficient; the energy source, intended use, and safety architecture are read together.

Product or limitThe distinguishing featureThe relevance of the results
Is it for indoor, outdoor or semi-open space? The area of use determines the limits of combustion product, ventilation, wind, water intake and instructions.
Can the device be fixed or portable? In the portable product, the overturning and tube connection; in the fixed product, the assembly height, the carrier and the beam arrangement are highlighted.
What technology does the radiant surface heat up with? The temperature, distance of fire and combustion path available in ceramic, piped or flame design are evaluated differently.
Is the LPG tube in the body of the device? The ventilation of the tube section, heat protection, regulator-horse alignment and change process are included in the technical file.
Is there a report of it working under the wind?Fire extinguishing, re-ignition, safety shutdown and reflector stability shall be verified under the environment conditions declared.
Is there a radio controller? The remote command is checked to see if it invalidates the security function; if there is a real RF function, the RED scope is also assessed.
Risk architecture

The main dangers to be addressed in the file

The protective, control and verification approach shall be based on the actual product cycle.

01

Turning and tube damage

The mobile heater can be dropped by a blow, and the centre of gravity, bottom, wheel, overturning shutter and tube fastening are tested together.

02

Not enough air

The use of the space is supported by design without warning.

03

The flame is lost in the wind

Sudden wind can extinguish or change direction of the flame, and the time of gas cutting, protection geometry and reactivation behavior are studied.

04

Radiation and surface heat

The reflector, grille and nearby building elements reach high temperatures, and the assembly distances and access protection are determined by real measurements.

05

Hortum-regulator incompatibility

The wrong pressure regulator or aged hose disrupts the ignition and leakage, indicating the permitted connections, range of change, and method of inspection.

06

External effects

Rain, UV, corrosion and low temperature can affect the ignition system with the material.

The conditional law matrix

When will the regulation take effect?

A single product name doesn't give the same answer for all models.

The subjectThe situationProduct-based evaluation
GAR 2016/426YES, YESLocal heating is for the purposes of the device included in the regulation; the normal use and gas category conditions of the product are defined.
Authorized organizationYES, YESType and manufacturing conformity or unit verification of the heater under the GAR includes participation of the notified body.
ATEXNO , NOT AT ALL .The use of gas as fuel is not sufficient; the design for use in explosive environments is a separate product range.
The Commission has also adopted a number of proposals for the implementation of the programme.IT 'S A MESS .From 1 July 2025, ceramic radiant (luminous) or piped local heaters emitting up to 300 kW of light are evaluated according to the product definition; the same coverage is not automatically obtained for outdoor terrace equipment only.
LVDIT 'S A MESS .If the fan, ignition or control equipment is connected to the grid, the voltage and the entire product regulatory relationship are evaluated.
EMCIT 'S A MESS .In the case of electronic control or fan driver, emissions and immunity requirements shall be assessed according to device ports.
REDIT 'S A MESS .If Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or RF controls provide real radio functionality, security, EMC and spectrum requirements are addressed under RED.

Standard and verification approach

  • EN 416 series: When the design type of non-residential tube radiant heaters meets the coverage, the relevant product requirements are evaluated.
  • EN 419 series: Radiant heaters that run on non-residential gas are used especially in ceramic radiant designs by selecting the right part.
  • EN 14543: In LPG-powered outdoor terrace heaters, the product structure is the basic product reference if it meets the standard.
  • EN 437: It helps to establish gas categories, experimental gases and feed pressures consistent with the target country's conditions.
  • EN 13611: The gas is evaluated in accordance with the product standard according to its function as a component in safety and control arrangements.
  • Applicable electricity/EMC standards: The standard selection is based on the actual heater configuration with fan, firing, control, communication and network voltage.
Important distinction

GAR conformity for Indoor and outdoor gas heaters — Product conformity is a separate study.

ISO management system certification does not replace product-specific risk analysis, test evidence and compliance file.

The compliance work plan

In what order will the technical preparation proceed?

Defining the user environment

The interior, exterior or semi-open space shall be limited to fixed or portable structures, fuel arrangements and permitted aeration conditions.

Disconnect heating technology

For piping, ceramic and terrace type devices, the architecture of the burner, reflector, discharge, assembly and LPG pipe is filed separately.

Conditional scope decisions

ATEX, electrical, EMC and RED are activated for technical reasons if the explosive environment, electronic or radio function is intended only.

Environmental and security tests

The combustion, wind, overturning, radiation, surface temperature, bar/air conditioning and external environmental effects shall be verified according to the reported use.

GAR and setup control

After the approved installation process, the suspension, base, reflector, tube set, gas setting, label and safe spacing are connected to the production.

Product records to search for in the technical file

  • Heater type and use area definition
  • Drawings of the brush, radiant surface and reflector
  • Gas path, pipe, regulator or bucket data
  • Installation, stability and carrier accounts
  • Matrix of risk and legislation
  • Combustion, temperature, wind, overturning and if applicable energy performance tests
  • Critical parts with electric/radio options
  • Instructions for opening, ventilation, use and maintenance

They 're the entries for a healthy offer .

  • Radiant or terrace type
  • Nominal power and gas category
  • Use area with fixed/mobile assembly
  • Tape-regulator or loop layout
  • Reflector and body dimensions
  • Electric and radio options
  • Target countries, models and current reports

The installation geometry, wind/turning tests, gas sets and model lengths change the lab scope. Until technical drawings and targeted use are seen, no price or exact completion date is promised. The test area and bar installation for the pipeline radiant, and for the terrace heater, LPG sets, stability arrangements and outdoor environment scenarios are planned separately. The claim of indoor use does not cover the technical without evidence of aeration. The delivery of the suspension apparatus or base weight is also initially recorded; the missing piece of equipment may change the test kit.
