Auditor Training: Interviews, Sampling and Writing Findings

Auditor training should develop the ability to move from a requirement to a conclusion supported by objective evidence. The intended audit type and sector determine appropriate practical examples.

Questions for your situation

How should I choose between auditor and internal auditor training?

Determine whether you will audit your own organisation, a supplier or a system on behalf of another body. Techniques overlap, while authority, impartiality and reporting expectations differ. Ask for the intended role in writing. A general auditor course does not automatically satisfy a particular certification body’s assignment conditions.

Is an affirmative answer to every checklist question sufficient for an audit?

Support answers with relevant records, observations and examples. A process owner may describe an activity correctly while actual records show something different. The auditor examines sample scope and consistency. Look for exercises that require participants to test answers against evidence rather than simply read a prepared checklist.

Should I prescribe the solution when writing a nonconformity?

State the unmet criterion and objective evidence clearly. An auditor should not impose a preferred solution as if it were a requirement. The responsible organisation carries out correction and cause analysis. Respect the explanation limits appropriate to the audit type; writing a sound finding differs from prescribing a remedy.

Can the same case training be used for a team working in different cities?

Teach a common method while reflecting the processes and risks of different sites in the examples. For remote participants, plan document access, interview and sampling exercises. One group’s work cannot represent every participant’s individual competence. Participant numbers and practice time affect the programme plan.

Is earlier ISO 19011 training sufficient for the new edition?

With ISO 19011:2026 published, assess differences between the new guidance and previous knowledge. Preserve the earlier training as a historical record rather than rename it as new-edition training. Update needs depend on the person’s duties and methods. Competence cannot be inferred from the course date alone.

Has my skill been assessed if only an attendance certificate is issued?

An attendance certificate generally records participation; assessment of practical achievement should be explained separately. Ask how interviews, finding writing or report exercises are evaluated. Know the success criteria, feedback arrangements and appeal route beforehand. Do not make competence claims beyond what the document actually demonstrates.
