Inspection body training should address the item inspected, the decision criteria and the organisation’s relationships. General quality training does not replace competence in a particular inspection activity.
ISO/IEC 17020:2026 uses Type A and Type non-A. Comparisons with the previous edition should identify their dates clearly. Check the relevant accreditation body’s transition timetable separately. Simply choosing a new type name, without examining the organisation’s contracts and relationships, is insufficient preparation.
Examine the intended inspection scope, independence conditions, legislation and commercial relationships together. Technical skill alone does not resolve a conflict of interest. Training should map where maintenance, sales and inspection roles intersect and identify unacceptable assignments or engagements. The decision must reflect the applicable conditions.
Clarify the item, the inspection required, the applicable criteria and how the result will be used. Consider site access, safety and equipment needs. Inspection of a new installation and periodic inspection during use are different engagements. Training should produce a list of missing information to obtain before accepting the work.
Connect the observation, method, measurements or other evidence to the basis of the decision. State unexamined areas and limitations clearly. A general conformity statement must not appear to cover the entire facility. A training example should let another reader identify exactly what was inspected and under which conditions.
Practise the instrument’s working range, suitability for the method, error sources and data recording. Assess whether the person can perform the task reliably and use supervised work where needed. Previous training may contribute evidence, but authorisation for the new method is not automatic. The technical manager should follow the change.
Course outcomes are separate from the inspection body’s accreditation and its scope. Any accreditation claim in a report must follow the body’s current scope and applicable rules. Check personnel authorisation and any statutory permission as well. When choosing training, look for contract and reporting examples that explain these distinctions.
Share the subject, organisation or product, target market, current evidence and target date. The team can then separate consultancy, official fees, independent evaluation and realistic timing.
