ISO 17024 Training: Attendance Certificates, Examinations and Certification of Persons
Certification of persons assesses competence against a defined certification scheme. Attending a course, taking an examination and obtaining certification for a particular scope are separate stages.
Questions for your situation
Does putting ISO 17024 on a course attendance certificate make the person certified?
Check what the document confirms, who issued it and which certification scheme applies. Evidence of attendance does not replace the scheme’s competence assessment. Professional permission or customer acceptance may have additional conditions. Course outcomes should be stated clearly and any accreditation claim checked against the current scope.
What risks arise if only the instructor prepares the examination questions?
Consider how questions represent the intended competences, their difficulty, assessment consistency and confidentiality. Memorising classroom examples may not demonstrate professional skill. Review impartiality risks in the relationship between training and assessment separately. Practical work should connect the skill being measured to the purpose of each question.
Is identity verification alone enough for a remote examination?
Assess the examination environment, unauthorised assistance, accessibility, connection failure and confidentiality of records. The chosen method must be able to measure the intended skill. A multiple-choice test may be unsuitable for assessing a practical task. Training should define responses to interruptions and suspicious events in advance.
Can an AI-generated examination score be used without review?
ISO/IEC 17024:2026 addresses validation, monitoring and human oversight of AI use. Explain how the result is produced and how incorrect assessment will be detected. A training scenario should practise referring uncertain or inconsistent scores to authorised review. Using technology does not remove responsibility for the decision.
Can the training provider decide an appeal against an examination result?
Identify the subject of the appeal and the authorised process under the certification scheme. The training provider’s opinion differs from an impartial appeal decision. Preserve examination records and traceable communication about the application. Training should explain the correct route to the candidate without promising the outcome in advance.
Is an existing certificate sufficient when a certified person enters a new specialism?
Compare its scope with the competence requirements of the new role. An extension, reassessment or different scheme may be required. Read the relevant scheme’s validity and renewal conditions. Plan training around the identified gaps rather than attributing every new professional skill to the earlier certificate.
