ISO 3834: Selecting a Level, Welding Qualifications and Outsourcing

Personnel qualifications, procedure qualification and organisational quality controls are different evidence. Define scope from materials, processes, products and manufacturing locations together.

Questions for your situation

How should ISO 3834-2, -3 and -4 be selected?

Part 2 addresses comprehensive, Part 3 standard and Part 4 elementary quality requirements. Company size alone does not determine selection; consider products, welding risks, customers and applicable product standards. ISO 3834-1 provides the selection framework. Identify the necessary technical level instead of choosing only by price.

Do qualified welders remove the need for other organisational evidence?

Welder qualification concerns an individual's defined welding scope. Procedures, coordination, materials, equipment, inspection and records require organisational controls separately. Personnel scope should represent the work's process and materials. Qualified staff do not make every welded product automatically conforming.

Are the WPS and procedure qualification record the same document?

The WPS specifies the production welding method; the qualification record provides assessment evidence. Essential variables and use boundaries should agree. A record prepared for another job does not automatically cover every new joint. Check qualification coverage before using different materials or thicknesses.

Can an organisation establish scope if welding is outsourced?

Define technical conditions, supplier competence, inspection and acceptance responsibilities. Identify activities actually managed and assumed within the assessed scope. Supplier certification can help but must represent the work and its boundaries. Do not present uncontrolled outsourced work as your own demonstrated production competence.

Does factory scope automatically include welding on construction sites?

Site equipment, environment, storage and supervision may differ. Show how field welding enters scope and controls. Verify personnel and procedure suitability for the actual work. Notify new site activities in certification planning and determine additional review needs.

Does ISO 3834 replace CE marking or EN 1090?

No. ISO 3834 concerns welding quality requirements. EN 1090, PED or other routes may also apply to the product. Shared records can help, but one certificate does not complete another product procedure. Track each document's scope and conditions separately during surveillance and renewal.

What should the main manufacturer do after finding a defect in subcontracted welding?

Identify joints, materials, procedures, personnel and inspection records. Outsourcing does not remove your acceptance responsibility. Investigate causes and effects on similar work and plan suitable repair and reinspection. The subcontractor's certificate alone does not justify accepting defective work.
