Natural Cosmetics: Ingredient Origins, Safety and Label Claims

A natural cosmetic claim needs support from the formulation and the selected assessment rules. A natural-content calculation does not automatically verify product safety or every marketing statement.

Questions for your situation

Can a product with a high natural-origin percentage be called entirely natural?

Natural and natural-origin may have different meanings under the chosen method. Explain ingredient categories and the formulation used. Check programme and labelling rules before turning the calculated percentage into another claim. Avoid wording that would mislead consumers about the product's characteristics.

Does an ISO 16128 calculation replace natural cosmetics certification?

ISO 16128 provides relevant definitions and a calculation framework; it does not itself satisfy an entire private certification programme. Labelling, safety and other legal requirements need separate consideration. Establish at the outset whether the customer needs a calculation report or certification under a particular programme.

Does using botanical essential oils remove the need for product safety assessment?

Natural origin does not make a substance safe at every concentration and use. Assess the formula, application and relevant restrictions. Check required allergen and label information separately. A natural claim does not replace safety evidence or cosmetic regulatory obligations.

Does the same INCI name have the same natural-content value across suppliers?

Sources, processing and supplier information may differ. Match the relevant index and technical evidence to the actual raw material. Identical INCI names do not demonstrate equivalent assessment conditions. Include the new source's information and approval in change records.

When preservatives change, is recalculating the natural percentage the only task?

Also assess effects on microbiological safety, stability and packaging compatibility. Determine necessary tests and safety-file updates. A higher percentage does not establish that the product is safer or more stable. Include technical verification time in the launch schedule.

What evidence is relevant when a customer challenges a natural claim on the label?

Review the exact wording, method, formulation version and ingredient evidence together. Verify certification scope and permission where applicable. Correct calculation errors or unsupported wording. Preparing a new label does not remove the need to assess the effects of earlier claims already on the market.
