IFS Food Version 8 Doctrine v5 Requirements

IFS Food 8 Doctrine v5 is the April 2026 clarification document used alongside the IFS Food version 8 Standard. Its version number refers to the doctrine, not a separate Food Standard.

  • Content reviewed: 8 September 2026

What the standard covers

IFS Food evaluates food products and manufacturing processes. Preparation covers management responsibilities, the food safety and quality system, HACCP, personnel, production controls, traceability, verification and corrective action. A site needs evidence that these controls work in daily production, as well as controlled procedures. The audit scope must reflect the products and processes being certified. See the IFS Food version 8 Standard.

Which v5 changes deserve attention?

The v5 contents identify new or updated explanations concerning incident notification under requirement 1.2.6, cancelled audits, auditor and reviewer training, changes to company identification records, exceptional circumstances and food safety culture. This is a summary of selected changes, not the complete requirements. Unmarked entries carry over earlier explanations. Read the linked clauses in the official Doctrine v5.

When do the clarifications apply?

The doctrine sets a default of two months after publication for new or amended rules, unless another date is specified. Confirm the applicable edition and exceptions when planning the audit. The publication and application rules appear in the doctrine foreword.

A practical site preparation checklist

A useful preparation approach is to create a short change register with four columns: affected clause, existing practice, action owner and evidence of completion. For incident reporting, test who contacts the certification body when the usual contact is absent. For culture, ask staff how they report a food safety concern and compare their answers with actual follow-up records.

Review changes with production, quality and senior management together. Record which explanations apply to the site and why others do not. Use one recent production batch to check that procedures, training, traceability and verification records tell a consistent story. These are practical preparation suggestions; acceptance depends on the applicable IFS requirements and audit findings.

Frequently asked questions

Does Doctrine v5 replace IFS Food version 8?

No. It clarifies the standard and must be read with it.

Is this a complete audit checklist?

No. Use the official standard and applicable doctrine for the full requirements; this guide highlights the purpose of v5 and a preparation approach.

What should we send when requesting an audit plan?

Provide the site address, product groups, process flow, workforce and shifts, current certificate and planned production changes so that the proposed scope can be reviewed.
