ATEX assessment process: ignition evidence and manufactured configuration
Follow a controlled product assessment from actual ignition questions through design changes and production closure.
Build an assessment around the design
Identify the marketed configuration, intended atmosphere and operating conditions, then map applicable essential requirements to the design and evidence. The selected procedure determines the technical and body tasks. A review of a document folder alone is not proof that a sample or manufactured product follows the design on which the assessment depends.
Keep drawings, materials, critical interfaces and operating limits controlled. Record which ignition questions are addressed by calculations, examinations, tests or other justified evidence. Harmonised references can support covered requirements when applicable; a standard title or a summary list does not establish the adequacy of every method or configuration.
Hypothetical case: substituted seal and bearing
A rotating non-electrical agitator is assessed using one seal material, but production substitutes another seal and bearing arrangement. Obtain the design/BOM revisions, operating loads, assessment records and manufacturing instructions. Identify the consequences for contact, friction, temperature and other relevant ignition questions rather than assuming the earlier report covers the substitution.
Assign competent change review and traceable closure evidence. If the selected route involves an approved type, changes affecting conformity or validity conditions must be referred to the body holding its technical documentation. Do not invent a successful test, a failed test or a redesign instruction without the relevant technical assessment.
Close the release decision
Link each unresolved question to the requirement, affected configuration, responsible party and required evidence. Check that approved remedies reach production and instructions, and review whether remaining variants are covered. A revised drawing or the date on a report is not by itself evidence that the manufactured product meets the assessed configuration.
Kayra can organise the action register and coordination. Designers, laboratories and any notified body retain their actual technical tasks; the manufacturer establishes supported conformity and consistent production. The next action is documented closure of the seal/bearing change and affected release scope, not completion of a generic audit checklist.
