SPICE Training: Choosing a Model and Assessing Process Capability

Start SPICE training by identifying the model, edition and customer expectation. The legacy ISO/IEC 15504 heading does not mean every current process assessment programme produces the same certificate or report.

Questions for your situation

Which course should we choose when a customer asks for SPICE?

Obtain the assessment model, version, target processes and expected output from the customer in writing. Distinguish general process assessment knowledge from training in a sector-specific model. An Automotive SPICE request, for example, is not satisfied by a general ISO 15504 course title alone. Match practical exercises to actual projects and roles.

Is ISO 15504-2 still the current assessment standard?

ISO lists ISO/IEC 15504-2:2003 as withdrawn; the related work connects to 33002, 33003, 33004 and 33020. Training should distinguish legacy model terminology from current sources. Read the model specified in the customer contract separately. Do not automatically declare every record with the earlier title invalid.

Where can an agile development team find process evidence?

Evidence need not consist only of lengthy procedures. Work items, requirement changes, reviews, test results and release decisions can be linked. However, the presence of records in a tool does not alone demonstrate achievement of the process purpose. Training should trace a concrete example from a user need to the delivered release.

Is outsourced software development excluded from the assessment scope?

Examine contractual responsibilities, delivery acceptance, change control and interfaces. The external team’s work affects the organisation’s procurement and integration processes. Where data access is restricted, plan suitable alternative evidence and disclose limitations. Training should investigate responsibility gaps between delivery of an external component and internal system testing.

Does a good result on one project demonstrate the entire company’s level?

State the assessed processes, organisational units, projects and sampling limits. Do not extend one project’s result unconditionally to the whole company. Further evidence may be needed to show common processes operating on other projects. Training should keep result statements within assessment scope and explain the model’s ratings accurately.

Should we write new documents first when a process receives a low rating?

Investigate whether the gap concerns the process purpose, implementation, resources or evidence collection. Creating documents solely for assessment day does not deliver lasting improvement. Prioritise work by business impact and recurrence risk. Training should produce an improvement plan with ownership, practical action and a way to check the result.
