ISO 17025 Training: Methods, Measurements and Laboratory Decisions

Laboratory training should use the actual methods involved in testing and calibration. General knowledge of the standard is not the whole competence needed to operate a particular instrument or authorise a result.

Does using a standard method remove the need for verification?

The laboratory needs to demonstrate that it can perform the method under its own conditions. Changes outside a standard method’s scope may require more extensive validation. Consider the matrix, range, instrument and personnel together. Training should distinguish the published method from the laboratory’s evidence of its own performance.

Does a calibration label make every result from an instrument reliable?

The calibration scope, range, uncertainty and conditions must suit the actual work. Examine intermediate checks, maintenance and signs of drift as well. The label is only an initial indication. A training example should compare the calibration report with the measurement need and identify results that are not supported.

Is the laboratory responsible for the representativeness of a sample brought by a customer?

Clarify who is responsible for sampling and what item the report’s results concern. The laboratory checks the identity and condition of the sample received. Where representativeness is unverified, do not make an unconditional claim about the entire batch. Training should connect sample acceptance, limitations and report scope.

How is conformity decided when a result is close to a limit?

Identify the applicable specification, decision rule and treatment of measurement uncertainty. Clarify conditions that need agreement with the customer beforehand. Rounding a number and writing compliant is not defensible in every case. Training should use a clear example showing how different decision rules can affect interpretation of the same measurement.

Can a new analyst automatically inherit the previous employee’s authorisations?

Assess method knowledge and practical performance, and create the necessary supervision and authorisation records. A qualification or earlier course attendance may be insufficient on its own. Plan training around the actual methods, matrices and instruments. Check the effect of personnel changes on report authorisation separately.

Do all tests become accredited after staff take ISO 17025 training?

Training supports personnel development; laboratory accreditation is a separate process with an activity and method scope. Distinguish accredited results from results outside that scope correctly. Specify the laboratory’s methods and intended roles when choosing the programme. A training certificate cannot be used to claim an extension of accreditation.
