Can equipment suitable for gas also be used where combustible dust is present?
Gas and dust assessments differ. Markings and documents should identify the covered environment. Dust accumulation, surface temperature and protection methods matter. Verify both uses separately if both are claimed. Obtain substance and area-classification information before selecting equipment by model name.
Who determines the zone: the manufacturer or the user organisation?
Workplace explosive-atmosphere assessment differs from product design and conformity assessment. The user's zone, substance and operating information informs equipment selection. Manufacturers define product use and protection characteristics. An ATEX product certificate does not establish completion of site classification or explosion-protection work.
Are non-electrical pumps or mechanical equipment outside ATEX?
Electrical operation is not the only consideration. Assess equipment capable of presenting its own ignition sources in intended use. Hot surfaces, friction, mechanical sparks and static electricity may matter. Review normal and fault conditions before excluding equipment merely because it uses no electricity.
Does conformity continue after replacing a motor or cable gland with an equivalent model?
Check effects on protection methods, temperatures, sealing and certificate conditions. Commercial equivalence does not establish explosion-safety equivalence. Compare component documents and installation instructions. Complete necessary reassessment or body notification before assuming existing scope remains applicable.
Does every ATEX product require the same notified body certificate?
The route depends on product type, group, category and legislative procedure. One certification package cannot fit every product. Components and independent equipment may have different outputs and marking conditions. Clarify intended use and classification, then establish required assessment steps in writing.
Can equipment simply be serviced and reused after overheating on site?
First secure the equipment safely and arrange competent investigation. Compare ambient temperature, load, maintenance and installation with product limits. Determine possible effects on other units and notification needs. Maintenance does not automatically resolve design or conformity problems; return-to-use decisions require technical evidence.
