EMC: Changes to Cables, Software and Operating Environments

Electromagnetic compatibility concerns emissions and operation in the expected electromagnetic environment. Cables, accessories and operating modes can affect how representative tests are.

Questions for your situation

Can EMC and electrical safety testing replace each other?

No. EMC addresses electromagnetic disturbance and immunity; electrical safety addresses different hazards. A product may need evidence for both. One report does not demonstrate that the other assessment occurred. Identify the product, environment and applicable regulations together at the outset.

Can a device tested for industrial use be sold for home use?

The environment may change applicable limits and expected disturbances. Check whether existing reports represent residential use. Instructions must not conflict with marketing claims. Define the actual intended environment and complete necessary additional assessment before claiming suitability everywhere.

Can customers receive longer cables than those used during testing?

Length, shielding, connections and layout can affect EMC results. Evaluate configurations expected in normal use. Explain how the tested arrangement represents supplied accessories. Being an accessory does not remove a cable from assessment; technical effects may require further tests or use limitations.

Should EMC be reconsidered after a software-only update?

Changes to clock rates, communication, power control or operating modes may affect EMC. Full retesting is not automatic, but technical review is needed. Record relevant differences between tested and released versions. Preserve the relationship between customer software and supporting evidence.

Do fixed installations and separately marketed apparatus follow identical procedures?

EMC rules distinguish apparatus from installations permanently used at a particular location. Installation-specific provisions do not automatically remove duties for commercial equipment incorporated there. Assess conditions for installation-specific items separately. Describe supply arrangements, location and responsible parties in the application.

Is an old passing report sufficient when the device disturbs other equipment on site?

Compare site configuration, cables, grounding, accessories and modes with the report. Product, installation and interaction problems may require different actions. A passing report does not remove complaint investigation. Assess affected products, corrections and notifications, then update files and instructions accordingly.
