ISO 22301 Training: Disruption Scenarios and Recovery Plans
Business continuity training should exercise the people who make decisions during disruption as well as develop written plans. IT recovery arrangements do not replace planning for every business activity.
Questions for your situation
Are business impact analysis and risk assessment the same exercise?
Business impact analysis examines how disruption consequences develop over time and establishes priorities. Risk assessment examines events and conditions that could cause disruption. They inform one another, but renaming the same table is insufficient. Explain recovery priorities through concrete impacts on the organisation's services.
Can every process be assigned a four-hour recovery target?
Justify recovery times against activity impacts, dependencies and acceptable disruption limits, then check technical and commercial feasibility. Giving every process the same target may create conflicting priorities. Use customer service, payments and production examples to develop a reasoned recovery sequence.
Is a business continuity plan complete if cloud backups exist?
Assess personnel, access, communications, facilities and supply dependencies alongside data restoration. Demonstrate that restored systems can actually operate. An unavailable identity service, for example, may prevent access to backup data. Measure technical recovery separately from the resumption of service to customers.
Should a tabletop exercise send disruption notices to real customers?
Define exercise boundaries, roles and external communication rules in advance. Simulation messages must not be confused with real incident notifications. Do not send misleading messages to customers or the public without authorised approval. Practise draft messages, decision timing and approvals within the agreed exercise boundaries.
What should be updated when the main supplier changes?
Review the new supplier's service times, alternatives, data and stock dependencies, and disruption notification conditions. Test whether previous recovery assumptions remain valid; updating telephone numbers may be insufficient. Brief affected teams on the revised scenario and determine the necessary exercise scope.
Does an ISO 22301 course guarantee uninterrupted operation?
Training develops management system skills; it does not guarantee zero downtime or a particular outcome in every disaster. Course certification also differs from organisational certification. Evaluate implementation, available resources and learning from exercises. Select programmes with objectives that include these practical activities.
Share the subject, organisation or product, target market, current evidence and target date. The team can then separate consultancy, official fees, independent evaluation and realistic timing.
