PED: Pressure, Fluid Groups and Equipment Assemblies

Pressure equipment classification depends on more than a gauge reading. Consider design pressure, volume or diameter, fluid characteristics and equipment type together.

Questions for your situation

Does low operating pressure remove the need to consider PED?

Use maximum allowable pressure PS and design conditions, rather than only current operating pressure. PED's general scope starts above 0.5 bar PS; exclusions and technical thresholds require separate examination. Classification also depends on whether the item is a vessel, piping, accessory or assembly.

Can using another chemical instead of water affect the same tank's conformity?

Reassess fluid group, state, temperature and material compatibility. Identical pressure and volume need not produce the same category or safety outcome for another fluid. Compare new use with design limitations. Matching connections alone do not justify a change without manufacturer instructions and technical assessment.

Do CE-marked pressure components complete assessment of an assembled skid?

Assess integration, interface compatibility and overpressure protection separately. Identify who assumes the assembly manufacturer's role. Component conformity does not automatically establish safe interaction. Show flow diagrams, design boundaries and protective-system relationships in the application.

Should equipment under sound engineering practice carry PED CE marking?

Equipment under PED Article 4(3) does not carry CE marking under PED; other applicable legislation may independently require marking. Safety responsibilities still apply, including suitable design, manufacture and instructions. Classify correctly before responding to a customer's request for CE marking.

Which welding records can affect the delivery schedule?

Plan material traceability, procedures, personnel qualifications, examinations and tests together. The category and selected procedure may require approvals before production. Missing evidence may be impossible to recreate retrospectively after completion. Schedule design, manufacturing and final assessment stages separately in quotations.

Is periodic inspection of equipment in use a new CE assessment?

Periodic in-use inspection differs from design and market-placement conformity. Assess separately whether repairs or changes trigger further conformity procedures. An inspection report does not automatically replace the original manufacturing file. Identify the equipment, dates and purpose covered by each document.
