EMC assessment: operating modes, evidence and production consistency

Plan assessment around normal intended operation and traceable configurations rather than treating an idle observation as whole-product coverage.

Plan the relevant phenomena and configurations

AnnexII EMC assessment considers relevant phenomena and all normal intended operating conditions. Where apparatus has different configurations, the assessment must address configurations identified by the manufacturer as representative of intended use. Explain why operating modes, connected loads and interfaces are represented; a test booking alone is not that justification.

The technical file links requirements, risk analysis, design, methods and results. Manufacturing controls must preserve the assessed configuration. Distinguish a laboratory’s defined observations from the manufacturer’s complete conformity decision and from any design examination chosen under AnnexIII; these roles and outputs are not interchangeable.

02

Hypothetical case: drive assessed only at idle

A variable-speed drive’s available report describes an idle configuration, while normal use includes several motor-control modes and loaded operation. The production schedule relies on that report without a coverage explanation. Obtain firmware versions, motor/load arrangements, ports, cable routing, intended environments and the actual report setup before interpreting what has been assessed.

Ask the competent technical party to justify representative operation and additional assessment needs. Record which emission and immunity questions remain open for normal use. Do not invent a passing result or claim every mode must receive an identical test; establish an evidence-backed plan and keep unsupported release claims out of the file.

03

Close the relevant gaps

Assign each gap a requirement or phenomenon, controlled configuration, responsible person and closure evidence. If a design remedy changes filters, grounding or operating control, review the assessed configuration and production instructions together. A revised drawing is not proof that the manufactured apparatus follows the remedy or that the remaining assessment is complete.

Kayra can organise the evidence and action register. Engineering and laboratory parties retain responsibility for their defined technical work; the manufacturer establishes conformity and consistent production. The next action is closure of the identified operating-mode gaps with traceable evidence before declaration or release.
