EMC emissions and immunity: distinct questions in one assessment plan

Select phenomena, operating configurations and performance observations without treating an emissions report as proof of immunity or electrical safety.

Separate what the two assessments ask

Emissions concern disturbance generated by equipment; immunity concerns performance under disturbance expected in its intended use. These are different essential-requirement questions. Define the environment, normal modes, ports, connections and intended function before selecting relevant methods and criteria with the competent technical party.

The directive does not supply one universal test-level table for all apparatus. Record the applicable technical specifications, justified conditions, representative setup and what counts as unacceptable degradation for the assessed use. EMC evidence also does not establish electrical shock, thermal or other safety conformity; those requirements need their own applicable-law treatment.

02

Hypothetical case: refrigeration control evidence lacks immunity

A refrigeration controller file contains emissions evidence but no explanation of behaviour under expected electromagnetic disturbance. Its normal function includes maintaining a control output and retaining settings during intended operation. Obtain the hardware/firmware version, connected loads, operating modes, environment and report setup before defining the missing immunity questions.

Agree the relevant technical assessment and observation plan, including how output behaviour, settings and recovery are recorded. Do not invent a measured failure or successful result, or assume a single generic immunity level covers every environment. Keep emissions coverage and immunity conclusions separate in the evidence matrix.

03

Interpret observations within their scope

The report should identify specimen construction, operating configuration, connections, methods, conditions, observations and limitations. Explain how each result answers a relevant requirement and whether unresolved behaviour needs design work or additional evidence. An unexplained reboot or recovery observation cannot be relabelled acceptable simply to meet a delivery date.

Kayra can organise the phenomenon/configuration matrix and technical enquiries. The laboratory and engineering parties retain responsibility for their defined assessment; the manufacturer establishes supported conformity. The next action is completion of the missing immunity evidence and its reasoned interpretation alongside emissions, not a declaration that one report covers every risk.
