EMC after release: changes, complaints and the continuing evidence basis
Review hardware and firmware changes without inventing an annual EMC product-certificate renewal cycle.
Identify what must remain current
EMC does not impose one general annual product-certificate renewal programme on all apparatus. Manufacturers must maintain conformity of series production and account for design, characteristics and relevant technical-reference changes. Keep declarations current and technical documentation accessible; a commercial renewal invoice is not evidence that current apparatus remains supported.
Distinguish the ordinary internal-control route from any actual chosen type-examination scope and document conditions. Where such examination was used, clarify change questions with its genuine issuer rather than assuming that an old document covers every revision. Apparatus retention duties and fixed-installation operational-lifetime records are different obligations, not a shared expiry date.
Hypothetical case: display firmware increases polling activity
An industrial display receives firmware that changes interface polling and concurrent operating behaviour. Production records still point to the earlier version, and users report intermittent disruption near other equipment. Obtain revision histories, normal operating configurations, connection information, complaint circumstances and the previous assessment basis; do not infer the technical cause from timing alone.
Refer the change and complaints to the competent engineering assessment and identify affected apparatus or batches. Decide the evidence and corrective work needed, including appropriate regulatory action if the actual circumstances require it. Do not wait for a supposed annual certificate visit or close the matter with an unrelated renewed management-system certificate.
Review output and responsibility
Record whether the current configuration is supported, needs additional evidence or requires restrictions/corrective measures. Align instructions, technical files, declaration references and production controls with the decision. Where fixed-installation complaints are involved, preserve the site engineering record and the responsible person’s authority-response arrangements separately.
Kayra can coordinate the revision/complaint register and technical questions. The manufacturer retains apparatus conformity and corrective duties; relevant installation responsibility and public enforcement do not pass to a consultant. The next step is a documented change review and evidence closure for the affected configuration, not a universal renewal promise.
