ETA Applications: Innovative Construction Products and Assessment Scope
A European Technical Assessment evaluates characteristics within a defined technical basis and intended use. It is not unlimited approval of every marketing claim.
Questions for your situation
Can ETA be considered if a similar standard already exists?
Check whether the standard fully covers the product and intended use. Where coverage is partial or assessment needs differ, establish the route with an appropriate technical assessment body. A similar name is insufficient. Explain technically where existing coverage does not address the product.
Does obtaining ETA complete every step for CE marking?
ETA provides a basis for performance assessment. Applicable production controls, third-party tasks and declaration duties still need completion. Check the governing framework against technical references and transitional provisions. Do not present ETA alone as completion of all conformity work.
Can we use a competitor's ETA because we manufacture a similar product?
Match product, manufacturer, conditions and scope to the document. Similar appearance or ingredients do not grant rights to claim another manufacturer's assessment. Clarify the file and route needed for supply under your name. Commercial licensing and technical coverage are separate matters.
Can ETA remain unchanged after formulation or application thickness changes?
Assess effects on evaluated characteristics and use limits. Variants outside existing ranges may need further assessment. Disclose changes to the technical assessment body and align manufacturing and installation instructions. A catalogue revision alone cannot bring a different application within the assessed scope.
Why do ETA costs and timing vary by product?
They depend on available assessment documents, requested characteristics, samples and test duration. Developing a new technical basis can expand the process. Define variants, environments and target performance early. Another product's timetable is not a guaranteed duration for your application.
How should an older ETA be checked during transition?
Review the ETA, supporting EAD's official status and applicable CPR transitional provisions together. Absence of a printed expiry does not imply unrestricted market rights. Consider product changes and new rules separately. Base review on your technical reference rather than a general online timetable.
What should be investigated if site performance differs from the ETA?
Compare identity, batch, storage, installation and use with assessed boundaries. Causes may involve manufacturing differences, excluded applications or installation. Identify affected goods and contact the relevant technical body. A favourable new test does not resolve the earlier event without explaining its cause.
Share the subject, organisation or product, target market, current evidence and target date. The team can then separate consultancy, official fees, independent evaluation and realistic timing.
