Food safety when products, contract manufacturing and customer requirements change
Recipes, process flows, sites and customer requirements jointly shape the food safety file. Reuse genuinely shared evidence while tracking each scheme's own scope and assessment requirements.
Questions for your situation
Is ISO 22000 enough when a customer requests FSSC 22000?
Obtain the requested scheme name, food-chain category, site and product scope in writing. ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 are not the same certificate. Compare the parts of your existing system that remain useful with the additional requirements of the requested scheme.
Does BRCGS or IFS assess the whole brand or the manufacturing site?
List brands, manufacturing sites and processes separately. Confirm which products and processes the scheme covers. Map contract manufacturing, storage and traded products to the relevant scheme approach; brand ownership alone does not determine assessment scope.
Which records change when a new allergen enters the recipe?
Review receiving, storage, production sequence, equipment cleaning and labelling together. Assess cross-contact with other products on the line. Update the hazard analysis and control plans, and record how controls were verified and staff informed of the change.
Can I copy another factory's HACCP plan and change the product names?
Check whether flow, equipment, raw material conditions and intended consumers really match. Verify the flow diagram on site and assess hazards and controls for your facility. Another plan may support comparison, but cannot supply the justification for decisions about your own process.
Can a supplier's analysis report replace our acceptance controls?
Match the report to the batch, sample, method and specification. Supplier reliability and product risk inform the need for additional controls. One report does not represent every batch or hazard. Define how to handle adverse results, late reports and specification changes before they arise.
Does food safety certification automatically establish halal or kosher suitability?
Assess food safety separately from each scheme's ingredient, origin, process and mark-use requirements. Additives, flavours, enzymes, shared lines and supplier changes may need separate review. Confirm which body or scheme the destination market and customer accept before applying.
How should records expand for a new warehouse and refrigerated transport service?
Add temperatures, journey duration, product identity, loading and delivery points to the flow. For outsourced transport, specify responsibilities, monitoring-data access and deviation notification in the contract. Food logistics and pharmaceutical GDP obligations must be assessed as distinct frameworks.
Is producing a customer list enough for a recall exercise?
Trace the selected batch from incoming materials to dispatch. Reconcile stock, rework, losses and delivered quantities. Record contacts, timing, unreachable parties and decision responsibilities. Assign an owner and completion date to every gap identified by the exercise.
Practical example
A fictional food business starts manufacturing a retailer's private-label product containing milk, with dispatch from a different warehouse. The review covers allergen flow, cleaning, product approval, customer specifications and shipment traceability, beyond the label change. Any necessary certification scope change is planned separately with the relevant body.
This is a fictional example, not an actual client case or conformity decision.
Share the subject, organisation or product, target market, current evidence and target date. The team can then separate consultancy, official fees, independent evaluation and realistic timing.
