CE certificate or CE marking: separate the responsible documents
Identify the manufacturer’s marking responsibility and determine whether a product-specific independent certificate is required.
The mark and the supporting documents
CE marking communicates the manufacturer’s conformity claim where the applicable EU legislation requires that marking. There is no central EU office selling a general certificate that grants use of the logo. Some assessment routes require a notified-body certificate; others permit the manufacturer’s own assessment. Determine the route for the actual product.
Request the product’s EU declaration, the technical-file reference and any independent decision required by that route. Read a certificate’s product, procedure and conditions separately from the declaration’s manufacturer and scope. An ISO management-system certificate or a supplier’s component certificate does not automatically cover the finished product being sold.
A hypothetical branded appliance assembled from components
A company buys a CE-marked motor and enclosure, assembles them into an appliance and markets it under its own brand. The supplier offers a component certificate as the company’s “CE certificate”. Compare the finished configuration, intended use and integration risks: neither the logo nor the motor’s evidence demonstrates assessment of the complete appliance.
The company must establish its manufacturer role and assemble evidence for the finished product’s applicable requirements. Keep component records as supporting inputs, documenting which requirements they address and which integration questions remain. Do not sign a declaration for the assembled appliance merely by copying the component’s model number or certificate wording.
Resolve the commercial request
If a customer asks for a CE certificate, clarify whether they need the manufacturer’s declaration, a required body decision or additional contractual evidence. Supply the correct document with its limits rather than renaming a voluntary attestation. A procurement condition and the legal assessment route may require different records.
Kayra can support this document comparison and the preparation plan. The manufacturer remains responsible for the mark and declaration; an appropriately designated body makes any independent decision assigned to it. A consultation does not promise a certificate, waive a requirement or establish that the finished product is ready for sale.
