CE after release: changes, evidence updates and required surveillance
Distinguish maintenance of conformity from a universal annual renewal and identify product-specific body conditions.
Maintain the conformity baseline
CE marking is not a generic subscription renewed every year. Keep the declaration and technical evidence aligned with the product, current requirements and production arrangements. If an independent certificate is part of the required route, read its validity, change-notification and surveillance conditions separately. Those conditions cannot be inferred from the presence of the logo.
Use change control to identify modifications to design, materials, critical components, intended use or manufacturing. Assess their effect on risks and evidence before continuing to rely on the previous assessment. Significant changes may require renewed conformity assessment; the precise action depends on the applicable law and selected procedure.
A hypothetical power-supply replacement
A manufacturer replaces a discontinued supply with a cheaper unit while renewing an unrelated ISO certificate. The old CE file still names the discontinued unit. Compare specifications, integration, safety and existing report coverage. The ISO renewal does not establish that the changed product remains supported by the previous conformity evidence.
Record the engineering review and any additional tests or body enquiries required. Update the approved component list and affected declaration or file references when justified. The next action is a controlled change decision, not purchase of a yearly “CE renewal” document that leaves the substituted component unassessed.
Ongoing responsibilities
Assign responsibility for checking relevant legal and standard changes, handling field feedback and maintaining access to records. A changed contact address or manufacturer identity can also require document updates. Where the procedure includes surveillance, schedule the actual assigned activities without representing them as a universal rule for every CE product.
Kayra may support this record-maintenance plan and coordinate technical enquiries. It cannot extend a body’s certificate or promise continuing conformity regardless of changes. The manufacturer must maintain production conformity, while the designated body and authorities retain the decisions allocated to them by the relevant product rules.
