PPE CE Conformity: Protection Claims, Sizes and Combined Use

Assessment starts with the risks against which protection is claimed. Size, materials, service life and interaction with other equipment can affect that claim.

Questions for your situation

Can the same mask be both a medical device and PPE?

Intended use and protection claims determine the relevant routes. Protecting the wearer from hazards and serving a medical purpose may engage different legislation. Where both are claimed, assess each set of conditions. Appearance or one test report is insufficient; labels and marketing must match the technical file.

Is the PPE category selected by price or material?

Category follows the nature of the risk against which protection is intended. The same material may require different assessment under another protection claim. Define use conditions, hazards and performance limits. Select the appropriate procedure from the risk, rather than adapting claims to a cheaper route.

Does testing one size establish coverage of every size?

Assess differences in design, seams, closures and protected areas. Support representative sample selection with applicable technical requirements. Smallest or largest sizes may create different risks. Match report and certificate coverage to the product family before extending claims across all sizes.

Can certification continue unchanged after changing fabric or filter suppliers?

Compare material characteristics and manufacturing variables affecting protection. A supplier's identical product name does not establish equivalence. Complete necessary testing, file updates and relevant body approvals. Maintain traceability distinguishing production using the new material from earlier batches.

Are two separately CE-marked items necessarily safe when worn together?

Individual conformity does not establish compatibility in combination. Examine interactions such as eyewear affecting a respirator seal or earmuffs fitting a helmet. Follow manufacturer limitations and recommended combinations. Any claim of combined suitability should have supporting evidence in the product file.

Can a failure-to-protect complaint simply be attributed to user error?

Examine model, batch, use, maintenance and clarity of instructions. Compare the protection claim with the actual hazard. Investigate possible defects or misleading information before attributing fault to users. Determine affected products and necessary market measures according to the risk.

Who is responsible when we sell contract-manufactured protective equipment under our brand?

Assess the own-brand seller's manufacturer role under the relevant rules. Secure access to the contractor's tests and quality records. Control product type, protection claims and production changes. Outsourcing manufacture does not automatically remove conformity and user-information responsibilities.
