PED Classification: Category, Module and SEP Inputs
Classification is a documented technical decision, not a pressure-volume shortcut. The correct equipment and fluid inputs determine the table and available assessment procedures.
Use the correct table and fluid basis
Identify whether the product is a vessel, heated equipment, piping, a safety or pressure accessory, or an assembly. Annex II has different tables and special rules. Record PS, temperature and applicable V or DN. For fluids, use Article 13's group definitions and the actual substance or mixture hazards, including relevant temperature/flashpoint conditions.
Separate gas/vapour-related vessel tables from liquid-related tables. Multi-chamber vessels use the highest applicable individual-chamber category, and chambers containing several fluids use the fluid requiring the highest category. Record the basis and unresolved inputs; do not silently default unknown data to Group 2.
Avoid a false equal-product conclusion
Hypothetically, two vessels have equal PS and V, but one contains a gas and the other a liquid under the relevant temperature conditions. Entering both into the same table because their PS×V products match can produce an unsupported classification. Select the proper table first and retain the fluid-state and hazard evidence.
Then read the applicable thresholds, category boundaries and special rules. This guide does not assign a numerical category to hypothetical equipment with incomplete inputs. A calculation tool must disclose its table, units and assumptions and be checked against the actual directive.
Select a procedure only after classification
Article 14 maps Category I to Module A, Category II to A2/D1/E1 and the higher categories to specified combinations or quality-assurance/unit routes. Choose an available procedure appropriate to the equipment and production. SEP is not Category I and is not a CE-marking module under PED.
Assembly assessment separately covers relevant items, integration and protection against exceeding limits. For a Kayra enquiry, supply the inputs and proposed classification rather than asking for a guaranteed result. Its permitted activity and authority must be checked; manufacturer and any applicable body retain their own responsibilities.
Questions for this purpose
Is PS×V enough for every classification?
No. Equipment type, fluid state/group, temperature, table and special rules matter; piping uses applicable DN inputs.
Is SEP another CE module?
No. Article 4(3) equipment does not receive CE marking under PED.
Can a module be chosen before the category?
The classification determines the available procedures; incomplete inputs need resolution first.

Provide the equipment type, fluid classification evidence, PS, temperature and V or DN. Include the proposed table and assumptions so unresolved inputs are visible.
