PED: Changes, Approval Renewal and Production Surveillance
PED follow-up depends on the assessment procedure and what changed. A quality-assurance approval, type certificate and declaration should not be treated as one annually renewed document.
Read the procedure and approval conditions
Some PED procedures include quality-system surveillance or type-related certificate conditions; Module A is internal production control. Identify the actual procedure, covered equipment and manufacturing locations before planning a follow-up visit or renewal. Use the specific approval and Annex III obligations, not a generic calendar.
Article 6 requires serial production to remain conforming and changes in design, characteristics or referenced technical specifications to be considered. Keep the declaration updated under Article 17. The expiry or maintenance conditions of a body document are separate from retaining the technical file.
Review an outsourced joining change
Hypothetically, a manufacturer using a quality-assurance route moves permanent joining to a new subcontractor. Identify the affected approval scope, personnel/procedure qualifications, material traceability and surveillance conditions. Notify or submit the change as required by the actual procedure before assuming the previous approval covers it.
A valid ISO certificate at the subcontractor does not by itself establish the equipment-specific joining approvals or continuity of the PED route. Preserve change records and the responsible body's response. Refuse to issue unchanged documentation merely because the commercial renewal date has not arrived.
Separate product changes from use-stage duties
Check whether revised PS, fluid, material, safety devices or configuration affects the prior conformity evidence. An assessment outcome for the former design cannot be assumed to cover the revision. Operational inspection and maintenance requirements must also be considered separately for the equipment's place of use.
A Kayra request must specify the actual change, procedure and requested activity; permitted role and impartiality are checked before acceptance. No universal annual PED renewal, automatic certificate extension or guaranteed continued validity is offered here. Decisions belong to the responsible manufacturer and applicable body.
Questions for this purpose
Must every PED document be renewed annually?
No. Read the selected procedure and the actual certificate or approval conditions.
Can new subcontracting leave the old file unchanged?
Review the affected manufacture, qualifications, approval scope and evidence.
Does an approval replace periodic operational inspection?
No. Product-conformity follow-up and applicable in-service duties have different purposes.
