FSSC 22000: Categories, Prerequisites and Scope Extensions
FSSC 22000 combines the food-chain category, relevant prerequisite programmes and additional scheme conditions. Organisations already certified to ISO 22000 still need a separate transition assessment.
Questions for your situation
Does an existing ISO 22000 certificate mean FSSC needs only extra paperwork?
Assess how far the current system meets applicable FSSC requirements. Identify category-specific prerequisites and additional scheme conditions. Distinguish documentation gaps from implementation gaps. Renaming an existing certificate cannot create FSSC certification before the necessary assessment is complete.
Do food manufacturing and packaging manufacturing use the same application category?
Match activities and products to the relevant food-chain category. Prerequisite references and assessment scope may differ accordingly. Two activities under one company need not be forced into one category. Describe process flows, sites and outsourced operations clearly in the application.
Can a warehouse separate from head office affect scope?
Review its operations, product conditions and relationship to the existing assessment. Explain responsibilities for both controlled and outsourced storage. A shared company name does not automatically include the address. Plan required notification and assessment under the scheme's conditions.
Can returned products be reintroduced into production to reduce food losses?
Assess history, storage, packaging integrity and traceability. Evidence must support safety and legal acceptability of reuse. Waste-reduction objectives cannot override food safety decisions. Do not mix unsuitable goods or products with unknown histories back into production simply to reduce costs.
Does publication of a new scheme version immediately end our certificate?
Check publication, audit transition arrangements and current certificate status separately. Use applicable FSSC transition rules and the body's plan. Do not transfer deadlines from an old announcement to a new edition. Determine preparation needs separately for new applications, surveillance and upgrade assessment.
Is any FSSC scope sufficient when a customer asks for GFSI-recognised certification?
Clarify the requested products, activities and programme conditions. Verify actual certificate scope and status against relevant records. General recognition does not establish that your product or site is included. Additional customer supplier approval and product requirements still need to be met.
